Biocleaner in the wastewater treatment plant

Pilot studies at a wastewater treatment plant
Description of the technology:
The Biocleaner technology is applied for odour removal and treatment of excess sewage sludge and is installed in the existing biological ponds of the sewage treatment plant in Užliedžiai with a total usable volume of 2500 m3.
According to the technological scheme below, the excess sludge is regularly discharged in uniform quantities into a tank (aeration tank) where the Biocleaner treatment unit is installed. The treatment plant saturates the effluent with oxygen and starts the decomposition process with the help of micro-organisms. The initial treatment of the excess sludge results in the complete removal of unpleasant odours and up to 40 % removal of organic pollution. The effluent is saturated with oxygen up to 6-7 mgO2/l. The effluent from the aerotank is then transferred by gravity to an anaerobic reactor, where anaerobic bacteria remove the rest of the organic and biogenic material. The anaerobic reactor is equipped with a pump which returns part of the treated wastewater to the aerobic tank. The pump has a capacity of up to 10 m3/h.
After treatment, the treated effluent is discharged by gravity to the design location.
During the winter, additional aeration is connected to the aeration tank. The aerators have a capacity of 1,5 kW. The aerators are needed to prevent the pond from freezing.
Electricity consumption: 48 kWh electricity per day.
18 weeks after the start-up we have the results:

According to the laboratory tests performed, we can see that in a relatively short period of time the wastewater parameters tested have improved significantly. Therefore, we suggest that if the Biocleaner continues to operate, after a certain period of time, the parameters will continue to decrease and the quality of the wastewater treatment will tend to improve.
The effluent samples were analysed in the laboratory of UAB Ekometrija, which operates in accordance with the requirements of the international standard LST EN ISO/IEC 17025:2006.

On 18 July 2017, an initial wastewater sample was taken prior to the start of the Biocleaner trial, the results are below.
